Summertime in Snug Harbor, Rhode Island

Ever since I can remember when I was a young boy, my mother and father and younger brother and I would take off for at least a week to Snug Harbor.  Snug Harbor is an older village of sorts in southern Rhode Island, tucked away this summer vacation spot is walking distance to the marina, where fisherman must have come and gone for more than a century.

Some of my fondest summertime memories are those of crawling around with my brother and summertime friends under the old docks of the Snug Harbor Marina.   We would spend hours “under there”, as the tide came in and out with every return the tide would bring more wonders of the ocean and unique sea creatures for us to examine and play with.

One summer after playing underneath the old docks at the Marina, my brother and I and “gang” moved to the boat landing.  The boat landing was not much, just about twelve feet wide the rough and old pavement just sort of slowly dipped into the warm Rhode Island ocean waters.

The Sea-Horse:

My little brother was always adventurous wading out into the water off the boat landing.  One afternoon while swimming and wading around looking to catch a fish, a crab, a little lobster, the variety of different clams found in and around the shores and in the surf of the Rhode Island coastline.  My brother caught the most curious looking creature, a fish well not really a fish but not really a shellfish, it was a sea-horse.  Sea Horses are known to be a Caribbean sea-dweller and not found in the cooler waters of New England.  But if they were to be found anywhere in New England it would have to be the warm tide pools of southern Rhode Island right in Snug Harbor.

That afternoon I was back at the house hanging out and enjoying the summer ocean breeze listening to the waves and enjoying the sunshine, getting a tan.  My brother and cousins and friends came walking quickly back to the summer cottage, my brother carrying a large bucket filled almost to the brim with sea water inside that bucket there was a sea-horse.  None of us my parents and aunts and uncles included had seen a sea-horse outside an aquarium like the New England Aquarium in Boston, Massachusetts.  None-the-less right there in front of us was this curious little creature not bigger than a dollar bill, in fact it was quite small maybe three quarters the size or half the size of a dollar bill.
